Public Safety Tips
The Gambia Police Force is committed to keeping every citizen informed and prepared. The safety tips below are practical guidelines to help you and your family stay safe at home, on the road, and in public spaces.
Personal Safety
- Always be aware of your surroundings, especially in busy markets and public transport.
- Avoid displaying large sums of cash or expensive jewellery in public.
- Walk in well-lit areas at night and inform someone of your whereabouts.
- Trust your instincts — if a situation feels unsafe, remove yourself from it.
- Keep emergency numbers saved on your phone: Emergency — 116.
- Never accept drinks or food from strangers at social gatherings.
Road Safety
- Always wear your seatbelt — front and rear passengers.
- Do not use a mobile phone while driving.
- Observe speed limits and road signs at all times.
- Never drink and drive. Appoint a designated driver.
- Ensure your vehicle is roadworthy before any journey.
- Give pedestrians and cyclists right of way at crossings.
- Do not overload vehicles — this is both illegal and dangerous.
Fire Safety
- Install smoke detectors in your home and test them regularly.
- Keep a fire extinguisher accessible in your kitchen.
- Never leave open flames unattended — candles, cooking fires, or gas stoves.
- Have a family fire escape plan and practise it.
- In case of fire, call emergency services immediately: 116.
Child Safety
- Teach children never to speak to or go with strangers.
- Ensure children know their full name, home address, and emergency phone number.
- Monitor your children’s online activity and educate them on internet safety.
- Accompany young children to and from school where possible.
