Police Departments
The Gambia Police Force is organised into specialised departments, each responsible for specific areas of law enforcement, public safety, and administrative operations across the country.
Criminal Investigation Department (CID)
The Criminal Investigation Department is the principal investigative arm of the Gambia Police Force. CID detectives investigate serious crimes including murder, armed robbery, fraud, cybercrime, and other complex criminal matters. The department works in close collaboration with the Public Prosecutions Division and the judiciary to ensure effective prosecution of offenders.
Key Functions: Criminal investigations, evidence collection, forensic coordination, witness management, crime intelligence analysis.
Traffic Department
The Traffic Department is responsible for road traffic management, accident investigation, enforcement of road traffic laws, and driver licensing services. Officers are deployed at strategic junctions across all regions to ensure the orderly flow of traffic and reduce road traffic accidents.
Key Functions: Traffic control, accident investigation, road safety education, vehicle inspection, driving licence administration.
Human Rights and Professional Standards Unit (HRPSU)
The HRPSU ensures that all officers of the Gambia Police Force conduct themselves in accordance with the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and respect for human rights. The unit handles internal disciplinary matters and investigates complaints against police officers.
Key Functions: Internal discipline, complaints investigation, human rights compliance, officer accountability, conduct reviews.
Immigration Department
Working in coordination with the Ministry of Interior, the Immigration Department within the GPF framework manages entry points, border control, and the documentation of foreign nationals. Officers are deployed at all major ports of entry including Banjul International Airport, Barra Ferry Terminal, and other border crossing points.
Community Policing Department
The Community Policing Department spearheads the Force’s engagement with local communities to build trust, prevent crime, and promote public safety. The department coordinates with community stakeholders, religious leaders, women’s groups, and youth organisations to foster cooperative security arrangements.
Operations Department
The Operations Department coordinates the deployment of police officers across all policing divisions and regions. It manages emergency response, public order management, and tactical operations including crowd control during public events and ceremonies.
Administration and Finance Department
Responsible for the day-to-day administrative and financial management of the Force, this department oversees human resources, logistics, procurement, budget management, and internal communications to ensure the GPF operates efficiently and effectively.
Legal Department
The Legal Department provides legal advice and guidance to the Inspector General of Police, senior officers, and departmental heads on matters relating to legislation, prosecutions, civil matters, and the administration of justice. It ensures that all police operations comply with the laws of The Gambia.
